Tooth loss becomes a common ailment as we age. Whether it is caused by old age, trauma, or something else, missing teeth all need to be replaced. There are several types of restorative options to choose from, so how do you know which one is right for you? This list will provide you with insights to the types of restorations dentists suggest most to replace a tooth.
Types of Replacements for Teeth
Bridges replace teeth using a ceramic prosthesis anchored to adjacent healthy teeth for support. This process involves shaving healthy teeth on which to secure the prosthesis’ anchoring crowns. This option is also the most economical of the options.
Partial dentures are generated using a variety of dental materials, including acrylic resin and porcelain, and are stabilized using a wire system. The metal wire portion of the partial is generally hidden behind the material used to imitate natural gums. These rest between healthy teeth, using its shape and other teeth as anchors to provide stability. These do not require alteration of existing teeth.
Full dentures can replace an entire set of teeth using similar methods and materials as partial dentures. These restorations rest over gums and use the fitting and suction generated from its use to stabilize the bite. Additionally, many prefer using adhesive to stabilize dentures and kill bacteria.
Implant-supported restorations and dentures utilize dental implants to provide greater stabilization to teeth. These work with crowns to replace a single tooth, bridges to replace a section of teeth, or a complete denture to replace an entire row. In addition to supplying support to the restorations, dental implants also provide additional support to the jawbone, preventing accelerated jawbone deterioration. These, however, are the most expensive of these aforementioned options.
While there are many options to replacing missing teeth, all provide a reliable means of restoring dental function and improving your overall look. Choosing the right set of restorations can merely be a case of budget and preference.
